Pain Management Electro-Acupuncture

Electroacupuncture is also variously termed EA, electro-acupuncture or electrotherapy this practice augments the use of regular acupuncture and can relieve pain and restore health and well-being

At East West Herzliya, we apply the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine where health is achieved by maintaining the body in a ‘balanced state’ and disease in this case (pain) is as a result of an internal imbalance of yin and yang. This imbalance leads to blockage or stagnant flow of Qi (vital energy) along pathways known as meridians. It is believed that there are 12 main meridians and 8 secondary meridians and that there are more than 2000 acupuncture points on the human body that connect with them. Aliza Zisman a licensed acupuncturist  treating patients for 18 years determines whether Qi is weak, stagnant or otherwise out of balance creates a treatment plan to evaluate which acupuncture points are needed to be stimulated. Zisman, at East West Herzliya treats patients with  accumulation of Qi,

Pain Management Acupuncture is a complementary therapy that is being increasingly used in the day-to-day management of pain. Originated in China, over 3000 years ago and is practiced worldwide.  There are many the evidence-base studies proving acupuncture effectiveness for pain management and its administered  in many clinical settings worldwide and here in Israel.

Fine sterile needles are inserted into body locations known as acupoints. Classic texts describe up to 356 mapped points located on meridians or channels of energy flow on the surface of the body. In the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) system, the body is seen as a delicate balance of two opposing and inseparable forces: yin and yang. Yin represents the cold, slow, or passive principle, while yang represents the hot, excited, or active principle.

A tiny focused electric current is applied to the acupoints to the needle itself for at least 10-20 min to produce an opioid effect.  There are three main  opioids classes released with the use of electro acupuncture that are effective for pain management endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphin.  Low, mid and high range of frequencies are applied on the specific acupoints. The low-frequency stimulation (1–2 Hz) causes the release of endorphins and enkephalins, mid-range (12–15 Hz) stimulation results in the production of all three opioid classes, high-frequency (100 Hz) results in dynorphin release, One to three milliampere intensity of Amplitude produces a non-painful fasciculation of the muscle in which the needle is embedded which then create in pain reduction. If there is additional need a 30 min treatment is repeated after a 1 hour interval for a greater analgesic effect.
